As the New Hampshire pri mary nears, we are reminded of the many tests of a proper can didate given to us in recent years. Dan Quayle and Bill Clinton have given us the "Did you handle yourself correctly during the Vietnam draft?" test. Gary Hart and Bill Clinton have given us the "How is your love life?" test. George Bush is being asked to take the "Do you understand the common man?" test. Ah, but what sort of tests will we devise for our own Polk County candidates? I would propose one: The "Have you been harassed on the phone lately by rude, anonymous per sons?" test. Most people of any stature in Polk County appar ently have had this experience. We were talking with one lovely young lady just the other day, whose name was men tioned as a potential candidate Bingo! She got the rude phone calls - mean people saying ugly things because she had the (Continued On Back Page) International Contest Wed. at Toastmasters "Talk of the Town Toastmas ters" is proud to hold an Inter national Speech Contest on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 7 p.m. at the Western Steer Steak House. Bill Kuhn will be the Toast- master of the Evening. Local Toastmasters will be competing to advance to the regional con test which "Talk of the Town" will host next month, as well. Scheduled speakers will be Mike O'steen, Jim Bacovin, and Frank L. Palumbo. Participants in Table Topics include Ross Fox, Frank L. Palumbo, Cyn thia Andresen, and Tenell Ball. This is a great opportunity for you to find out what Toastmas ters is all about. Toastmasters gives you an opportunity to improve your communication skills through public speaking. Bridge players are invited. —Community Reporter Read The Bulletin For Local News Godlock To Be Honored At ICC There will be a reception to honor Karen Godlock, Polk County prep track star, today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Polk campus of Isothermal Commu nity College. Last G.C. Annual Offered To Public The Green Creek Elementary School will be publishing its last annual this year. This annual will commemorate the history of the 78 year old school and all the students who have passed through its portals by including photographs dating back to the school's early days. Annuals will be available to all students at the school as usual, but because of the senti mental significance of this last issue, additional copies are being offered for sale to the public at $6 a copy. These must be pre-ordered by Feb. 28th through Susan Smith, School Librarian, Green Creek Ele mentary School, Tryon, N.C. 28782. Feagan, Gosnell Seek Board Seats Charlie Feagan and Ross Gosnell have filed their candi dacies for the Polk County Board of Commissioners, elec tions supervisor Dale Edwards announced Friday. Feagan, of Columbus, is a large landholder in Polk County and has long been a leader in the Polk County Democratic Party. Gosnell, a Republican from Tryon, works in promotions for Michelin in Spartanburg. Also filing for office this week was Kim Wilson, who filed for Register of Deeds. The only other candidate to file since the period opened Feb. 10 was Grover Whitmire, a Republican from Sunny View who also is seeking a scat on the board of commissioners.
